What are your personal fitness goals?
My personal fitness goals keep changing as I evolve, learn and grow, but to be able to represent the lean physique I have currently is definitely a goal of mine. I think it is important to also be a good representation of a conditioned physique that is maintainable year round.
How will you use your #BiogenFaceOfFitness ambassadorship to inspire women to lead a healthy / fit lifestyle if you win?
Having been overweight for 18 out of the 19 years of my life and using sheer dedication and consistency, I was able to not only lose the weight but enter this competition which I never thought would ever be possible. I did not like what I saw in the mirror and it had nothing to do with self love. I knew that I was capable of achieving a body and developing a lifestyle that I could be happy with. I would like to ignite that fire in people and be an inspiration to females to strive for anything and everything that they work hard towards. Getting fit is a challenging task and I had the support of my mother and other sources of motivation and I wish to represent and stand for that for other individuals. It is not just about going on a diet for a month, losing weight and then gaining all of it back. It is about learning who you are as an individual, making short term goals, achieving those goals and repeating them. Those goals soon become habits which then turn into a lifestyle. I want any woman, no matter shape, size, race of background to be able to look at me and believe that if Luyanda can do it, then so can I. The #BiogenFaceOfFitness is an absolutely incredible way of continuing to share my personal experiences, helping others and assuring that individuals can be happy with what they seen in the mirror.
What health and fitness quote or mantra do you live by?
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”
Tell us about your fitness lifestyle
My fitness lifestyle is well rounded. I treat health and nutrition with the same importance as I do my training. Over the years, I slowly started reducing the processed foods that I consumed. Nutrition, as I have come to learn with trial and error, is a crucial part of being healthy and I have educated, and still do educate myself on what is nutritional. Being raised by a single parent, my mother has adopted the fitness and nutrition habits that are a lifestyle to her too. I consume whole foods, with good clean sources of proteins and fats. I do believe that once I started to master the key of balance, my lifestyle became more balanced. I train and workout around 5-6 days a week doing cardio and strength training.
Why do you think you’re the Biogen Face of Fitness?
I believe that I have quite an authentic and natural story to tell about how sometimes, you cannot have control of everything, but what you do have control of, you can change and make it work for you. I want people to know that success is not something that we just see on television or watch in movies but it is actually possible. I think that one of the biggest insecurities we as women have is our weight. Not just being overweight but sometimes, being underweight. I would love to represent all women through Biogen and Fitness Magazine who have created a platform for women like myself to reach out to others and help grow one another. I have incredible empathy and can almost relate to most of the stories that I receive on social media and just knowing that I either put a smile on someone’s face, inspired them to change their lifestyle or even motivated them to do ten more minutes of their workout, that would honestly be victory for me.
