How does fitness fit into your lifestyle?
For most of my life, I have been training but I never took training to the extreme that I should have, but kept things simple. I started karate when I was in my 30s, as it was one of my dreams to get involved in some form of martial arts activity.
When SA went into hard lockdown in March 2020 and all activity centres closed, I took it upon myself to join MoniqueFit online training and challenges, which was one of the best things I ever did. This was an incredible way to cope and a way to participate where you were not alone. At that stage, working and training from home was quite challenging, but I quickly adapted and took the training to a whole new level. On average, I train 5-6 days a week, sometimes 7, and I eat healthy. I do karate twice a week and for the rest of the week I train doing high and low impact HIIT and cardio at home or at the gym. Training has brought more inspiration to my life and I have seen results. I love the fact that when one is stressed or has had a hard day at work, working out is a way to de-stress. The endorphins that kick in are what I love the most.
What are your personal fitness goals?
To help ladies build their confidence, encourage them to start somewhere and to build themselves up slowly. To encourage them to be comfortable in their own skin and to break free! My motto in life is that you are the most valuable investment that you will ever make! I believe that it is important to start enjoying your exercise and to start looking after your body, health and mind. I have this outlook that it is all about the quality not quantity. It’s about progress, not perfection. It’s about showing up little by little daily, which will get you your results. I have been following Fitness mag for many years and it was a dream of mine to one day enter. After having a near-death experience this year, I have decided to live life to the fullest and to chase my dreams. Everyone has their own flaws, imperfections and insecurities and I’m the first to note my own, this journey is to inspire many about accepting your flaws and making them beautiful. Entering is all about inspiring people and showing them that there is no such thing as perfection, only progress. Age is just a number and this must not stop you from reaching your dreams or goals. It’s the struggles that have stumbled to strength. I am all about keeping things real, that your attitude determines your altitude. For me, it’s a very big start in getting out of my comfort zone by entering and for being confident about what I have achieved. My personal goals is to continue to tone specific areas of my body and to make them stronger, to learn new training techniques or methods, and to learn how my body will respond to these. Most importantly, to continue to enjoy and have fun in the process and to be an inspiration.
